 These are the auto-switch support devices responsible for providing the Special Services, both automatic and operator-based, which consist mainly in forwarding speech, managing user interactivity, rerouting calls according to various criteria (called party number, calling line identity, time bands), establishing a user-host dialogue, managing multimedia mailboxes, etc.

 The role of these services is changing rapidly from that of simple gadgets or accessories to that of elements denoting service quality and which are highly remunerative from the viewpoint of effectiveness and traffic.
